Harbinger - redesign WIP by TheDrowningEarth Harbinger - redesign WIP by TheDrowningEarth
A redesign of this guy [link]

Also got a chance to depict the VTOL battleframes that I conceptualized earlier, though these are different. Same principle though.

However, I do have plans to do a future version more faithful to the original design, as opposed to something completely different.

And still got quite a bit to polish. This will test my rendering abilities, which I haven't really taken far in any of my work.

You should seriously make some sort of graphic novel or something.

Well, I will. After I change careers though, working in public accounting is not very conducive to having free time for illustration.

Well, I'm not sure I could guarantee whether the gameplay would actually be any good.

I love this stuff.
Your mechs are great but your geared-out commando dudes are exceptional as well.  The colors your choose keep it gritty and the details you add to the gear make it more solid for me because while they're futuristic (helmet, armor, etc.) they're also grounded with sorta modern day real looking stuff like the rifle and utility vest.  When you do scenes like this, with ground troops and mechs all scouting around securing the rubble strewn field, it totally transports me into your world.
Really badass work.

Your Airborne Battleframe piece does the same thing for me.
Makes me wanna put a couple hundred hours into an action RPG that you were chief designer on.
This stuff you're doing is epic.
Looking forward to more!

I'm also planning on putting out more character designs and scenes with context, since I want to get more into the narrative aspect of it all, in addition to continuing visual/conceptual exploration.

Art direction today is tricky. I see a variety of concepts for equipment design, while my opinions are mixed (notably I'm not a fan of anything that looks too angular/boxy or overly complicated - or even flamboyant). But the mix of futuristic and current/dated equipment calls to me - it's a formula that's worked for a long time, since 80s-90s scifi films and a variety of other games/films today.

On a side note, I should be getting to creature concepts - I haven't done those in ages.

Game design has been something that's interested me for a while. I've liked the immersion and interaction from single-player games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, and to some extent the personal story in Guild Wars 2. But the same time I have enjoyed coop multiplayer, such as Gears of War's campaigns.

Multiplayer innovation is difficult - since almost every gameplay mode can be narrowed down to a classic archetype (DM/TDM, CTF, bombing, etc), while MMORPGs are still fundamentally gear/grindmills that end up getting defined by class trinity - no matter how much they try to avoid it.

It's hard to say how I'd go about doing a game. I'd say the concepts I have so far would be used in something akin to a Doom/Dead Space setting - so there's a bit of run and gun, but a bit of survival horror involved as well. There would be a single player campaign, though emphasis would be placed on multiplayer. There would be some gear grind, but gear would mostly offer convenience or cosmetic differences without being grossly overpowered.  People would have the old option of doing TDM/CTF/bombing type missions, but I would place greater emphasis on coop campaigns.

Decision making, dynamic and random events will help add variety to these campaigns, so that they aren't as predictable or repetitive. But I think another key aspect is creating consequences for defeat - which won't necessarily be bad. They simply send you down a different tree of events.
