Also, helmet designs are a bitch - it gets to a point where everything looks the same as it does elsewhere. But whatever.

Perhaps. Though a lot of scifi armor concepts are littered with questionable things these days. My idea was to go with the hockey mask aesthetic (made famous in HEAT and the Friday the 13th film series) - white mask with red markings and vent holes.
I had considered painting a skull on that helmet, but that's already been done enough times on headgear in mainstream games.
True, it has been done in many video games but THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT (its not just cuz they think it looks cool or because they're unoriginal). An enemy in heavy body armour, with extensive combat training, who is hard to put down, add on the fact that they have a human skull painted across their face, it's a huge intimidation factor (the more afraid someone is of their opponent the more likely they are to make mistakes). I do appreciate your throw back to classics like HEAT and Friday the 13, and I love the vent wholes in the mask, but I feel a different design with more of an intimidation factor (and less of a bright color) would be more effective for a future soldier (or really any soldier).
